Frequently Asked Questions for Mouthguards Sportsguards
Why should I get a custom mouthguard instead of a store-bought one?
Custom mouthguards from KA Dental are fitted from precise digital impressions of your teeth, so they sit comfortably without slipping or interfering with breathing or speech. Drugstore boil-and-bite mouthguards are bulky, dislodge easily, and often don't fit teens whose mouths are still growing. Studies show custom mouthguards reduce dental injuries by 60-90% compared to over-the-counter options. The cost difference is $30 vs $200, but the protection is dramatically better.
What sports require a mouthguard?
The American Dental Association recommends mouthguards for any sport with risk of contact, falls, or flying objects — which is most sports. Critical: football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, wrestling, boxing, MMA, rugby, water polo, BMX, skateboarding, and martial arts. Recommended for: baseball/softball, gymnastics, volleyball, cycling, equestrian, and any sport where falls happen. We see plenty of pickleball injuries too — it's worth a guard if you play competitively.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
Adult mouthguards: 2-3 years with regular use, depending on grinding intensity and care. Mouthguards thin out over time and lose their protective fit. Children and teens: 6-12 months on average, since their teeth and jaw are still growing. Bring it in to your regular cleaning visits and we'll check the fit. Replace immediately if you notice cracks, holes, deformation, or if it doesn't fit snugly anymore.
Can you make mouthguards for children?
Yes — we make custom mouthguards for kids as young as 5-6 (when they have enough adult teeth to anchor a guard). For young athletes whose mouths are still growing, we recommend checking the fit every 6-12 months. We can also make orthodontic mouthguards that work over braces. Most school sports leagues require mouthguards by middle school, and getting kids used to wearing them young pays off long-term.
How much does a custom mouthguard cost?
Custom sports mouthguards at KA Dental typically run $150-$300. Custom nightguards (for teeth grinding/bruxism) range from $300-$700 due to harder material and thicker construction needed for nighttime use. Most insurance plans don't cover sports mouthguards but often cover medically-necessary nightguards for diagnosed bruxism. The cost is much less than fixing a knocked-out front tooth (often $3,000-$5,000+ for an implant).
