Teeth Extraction in Palm Beach County – Safe, Gentle Removal

Tooth extraction may be necessary if a natural tooth is badly decayed or damaged. But also to facilitate other procedures.

Simple vs. Surgical Extraction

Simple Tooth Extraction

If the affected wisdom tooth is clearly visible in the mouth and has not broken off, a simple extraction should be sufficient to remove it in most cases. This procedure only requires a local anesthetic, and one of our doctors will simply grip the tooth and loosen it with forceps before pulling it free. A dental elevator that is inserted between the teeth and gums may also be needed in order to assist the loosening of the tooth.

Patients who undergo a simple extraction should avoid eating solid foods or any kind of chewing on the affected side of the mouth for several hours after their procedure. Rinse the mouth with saltwater and use warm compresses on the jaw. Also, be sure to take any prescribed pain medication. A little bleeding is normal and should not be cause for concern.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

If, the tooth, is not visible, has suffered severe breakage, or has simply not emerged yet, we will need to perform a surgical extraction. This will involve one of our doctors cutting and pulling back the gums in order to access the tooth, as well as possibly cutting it into multiple pieces. We will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth after your extraction is completed. This will involve changing gauze pads often, keeping the mouth clean by rinsing with saltwater, and making sure to relax and keep your head elevated so as to reduce bleeding.

Frequently Asked Questions for Teeth Extraction

Is it better to extract a tooth or get a root canal?

Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth with a root canal is preferred. Natural teeth function better than any replacement and preserve bone health. Extraction should be a last resort when the tooth is too damaged to save. We'll always discuss both options honestly.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

Extraction is recommended when a tooth is severely decayed beyond repair, fractured below the gumline, dangerously infected, severely impacted, or causing crowding. We always exhaust restorative options first — a root canal, crown, or even partial restoration is almost always preferable to losing a tooth. When extraction truly is the right call, we'll explain exactly why and walk you through replacement options (implants, bridges, partial dentures) before we proceed.

Does tooth extraction hurt?

The procedure itself is painless — the area is fully numb. You'll feel pressure but not pain during the actual extraction. Recovery involves some soreness and mild swelling for 2-3 days, manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice. For anxious patients or complex extractions, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation. Most patients say the anticipation was worse than the procedure.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Most patients are back to normal in 3-5 days, with the extraction site fully healed in 2-3 weeks. The first 24 hours are the most important: keep the gauze in place to form a clot, avoid straws and smoking (which cause dry socket), eat soft foods, and don't rinse forcefully. Mild swelling and soreness for 2-3 days is normal. Call us right away if pain worsens after day 3 or you notice fever, severe swelling, or persistent bleeding.

What are my options for replacing an extracted tooth?

You have three main options at KA Dental, listed roughly from most to least permanent. Dental implants (Dr. Krunal Patel and Dr. Amri specialize in these): a titanium post placed in the jawbone topped with a custom crown — functions and looks identical to a natural tooth, lasts 20-30+ years. Bridge: an artificial tooth anchored to the two adjacent teeth, no surgery required, lasts 10-15 years. Partial denture: a removable replacement, most affordable but least convenient. We'll walk through each option's cost, timeline, and longevity at your consult.

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

A simple tooth extraction at KA Dental typically costs $150-$300. Surgical extractions (broken roots, impacted teeth, bone removal) range from $300-$650. Wisdom tooth extractions are higher; see our wisdom-teeth FAQ for those numbers. Most PPO insurance plans cover extractions when medically necessary, often paying 70-80% after deductible. We provide a written cost estimate before any work — no surprises. CareCredit and in-house payment plans available.
