Frequently Asked Questions for Digital X-Rays

Are digital X-rays safe?

Yes. Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays — a single image is roughly equivalent to a few hours of natural background radiation, less than a flight from Florida to New York. We use lead aprons and thyroid collars during exposure. For pregnant patients, we delay non-essential X-rays unless there's an active dental concern. The diagnostic value of X-rays vastly outweighs the minimal radiation exposure.

How often do I need dental X-rays?

Frequency depends on your individual risk and history. As a general guide: healthy adults with no active issues typically need a full series every 3-5 years and bitewing X-rays every 1-2 years. Children may need them more often (every 6-12 months) because their teeth and jaw are changing. Patients with active decay, gum disease, or recent dental work may need imaging every 6 months. We never order X-rays unnecessarily — we'll only image what's clinically warranted at each visit.

What can dental X-rays detect?

X-rays let us see what the naked eye can't. They reveal cavities between teeth and under fillings, bone loss from gum disease, infections at tooth roots, impacted teeth, cysts, tumors, developmental abnormalities, jaw alignment issues, and the extent of damage from trauma. Without imaging, the dentist is guessing. With imaging, we can catch problems years before they become painful or expensive.

What is 3D cone beam imaging?

3D cone beam CT (CBCT) creates a three-dimensional X-ray of your teeth, jaw, sinuses, and nerves in a single 20-second scan. Unlike traditional X-rays which are 2D, cone beam imaging shows depth and exact anatomical relationships — critical for implant placement, complex root canals, oral surgery planning, and TMJ assessment. Dr. Krunal Patel and Dr. Amri use cone beam imaging routinely for implant cases. Radiation exposure is significantly less than a medical CT scan.

Does insurance cover dental X-rays?

Yes, in most cases. PPO dental insurance plans typically cover routine bitewing X-rays at 100% as part of preventive care, and full mouth series at 80-100% (subject to frequency limits, usually once every 3-5 years). 3D cone beam scans are sometimes covered when medically necessary, often partially. We verify your X-ray benefits before your appointment so you know what's covered and what isn't.
